Six signs your panel needs an upgrade

  • Your panel is full

No empty spots left to add anything new.

  • Breakers keep tripping

Kettle and microwave at once, and the power cuts out. Or the panel feels warm or buzzes.

  • You still have fuses

Insurance companies ask about them. We still replace them.

  • Your inspector or insurer flagged it

Often an old Federal Pioneer panel, or a letter from your insurance company.

  • You are adding something big

A hot tub, a car charger, a heat pump or a heated shop.

  • The outside hookup is damaged

The meter box or the pipe on your wall is rusted, bent or pulled down by ice.

What we do

Panel upgrade services across Grey Bruce

Nine kinds of panel job, each one ours. Tap a photo for the crew’s own words.

100 amp to 200 amp service upgrades

Built on 100 amp, now running a heat pump, a hot tub or a car charger.

“The original meter was located in the basement with some pretty sketchy wiring going on. We removed the old setup, upgraded the service stack outside, and relocated the meter base to the side of the house where it belongs.”

Federal Pioneer and Stab‑Lok replacement

Flagged by an inspector or your insurer? We tell you what it is. No scare stories.

“We tossed the old Federal Pioneer panel and installed this beast of a 62‑circuit 200A panel.”

Fuse box to breaker panel

Not always a bigger panel. If the same size is right, we say so.

“Replacing the old 100A fuse panel with a modern breaker panel for improved safety and reliability. Also swapped out the meter as part of the upgrade.”

Upgrades for EV chargers, hot tubs and shops

Can your service carry it? That is a look, not a guess.

“100 amp panel upgraded to a 200amp. Some meter work and a EV charger installed.”

Meter bases and service masts

The outside half, up high and tied to the utility. Same visit as the panel.

“We brought everything up to code with a brand new 200A panel and meter base.”

Panel and meter base relocation

Panel behind the furnace or in a closet? If it is coming off the wall anyway, move it.

“We mounted the new panel in a better location for accessibility, updated all the grounding and bonding to meet current code, and worked closely with the utility and ESA.”

Sub panels and separating circuits

A shop, a basement suite or a second unit, on its own panel.

“We took his old 100A panel and upgraded it to a 200A service, separating circuits to give each space its own dedicated power.”

Cottage, farm and barn panels

Shore cottages, barns and shops, long overhead runs, trenches across a field.

“Wrapped up the install of a weatherproof exterior panel today on the side of this barn.”

Commercial, halls and shops

Same work as a house. The difference is when the power can come off.

“We replaced the outdated 60A fuse panel with a new Square D 60A breaker panel. A simple swap that brings the system up to modern standards, improves safety, and makes resetting breakers much easier for the staff.”

    What decides the price

    • The line from the pole

    • The meter box
    • Any digging
    • Grounding
    • A hydro company visit
    • What you are adding

    Questions

    Panel upgrade questions, answered

Anything else, call 519-373-2543 or use the quote form.

    • How do I know if my panel needs upgrading?

A few signs. Breakers trip when you run two things at once, like the kettle and the microwave. There are no empty spots left in the panel to add anything. You still have fuses. Or a home inspector or your insurance company has flagged it. The most common reason is something new on the way: a hot tub, a car charger, a heat pump or a shop. Age on its own is not the test.

    • How much does a panel upgrade cost?

It depends on more than the panel. The line from the pole, the pipe that brings the wires down your wall, the meter box, any digging, and whether the hydro company has to come out all play a part. So we come look first, then give you a detailed estimate. Call 519-373-2543 and tell us what the label on your panel says.

    • Do I have to go to 200 amp?

Not always. It depends on what you run now and what you plan to add. A hall in Hanover went from an old 60 amp fuse panel to a new 60 amp breaker panel, same size. We tell you what your house actually needs.

    • Fuses or breakers: why does my insurance company care?

When a fuse blows you have to replace it, and it is easy to put the wrong size back in. A breaker just flips back on. Insurers and home inspectors often ask about fuse panels and old Federal Pioneer Stab-Lok panels. Book a look and we tell you straight what you have, whether you replace it or not.

    • Do you do the outside part too?

Yes. The meter box on your wall and the pipe that brings the wires down from the pole are part of the job. We have our own bucket trucks and a Power Line Technician on the crew, so one crew does it all, outside and in.

    • Can you move my panel while you are at it?

Yes. If your panel is behind the furnace, in a closet or hard to reach, the upgrade is the time to move it somewhere easy to get to.

    • Is the work inspected?

Yes. Every job is reported to the Electrical Safety Authority and open to inspection. We are a licensed electrical contractor, ESA licence 7017291, and covered by WSIB.

    • My panel just blew and I have no power. What now?

Call 519-373-2543. Do not fill in the form. Fire or smoke, call 911 first. Downed power line, stay well back and call 911.
