How a standby generator works

The power drops. The house keeps running.

Generator running
  1. 01Power on, from the pole.
  2. 02The power drops.
  3. 03The generator starts on its own. Nobody has to be home.

The transfer switch watches the incoming power. When the hydro comes back, it changes over again and shuts the unit down.

Out here, an outage is a week of problems

  • No water

    The well pump is electric.

  • No heat

The furnace needs power, even if it burns oil or propane.

  • A freezer full of meat

    With nothing keeping it cold.

  • A sump that stops

And a basement that is next.

  • A barn that still has to run

Whether or not the hydro is on.

  • A long wait for the hydro crew

The road crew has a long list before yours.

Panel old or full? Do both at once. The transfer switch ties into the panel anyway, so it is cheaper than doing it twice. See panel upgrades

    What decides the price

    • The unit and its size
    • The pad
    • The run to the house
    • The transfer switch
    • Panel work, if it needs it
    • The fuel connection
    • The permit and inspection

There are two numbers, not one: the unit, and everything around it. The second one depends on your property, so Tom looks first and you get one estimate with the whole job in it.

“We needed to upgrade our panel and contacted 3 contractors for estimates. We were very impressed with the professionalism of Dunne’s representative, Tom. He assessed the situation and provided a detailed estimate so we chose Dunne’s.”

    Questions

    Generac generator questions, answered

Anything else, call 519-373-2543 or use the quote form.

    • Will a generator run my whole house?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It depends on the generator and on what your service can take. Whole home backup means everything stays on. The other way is to pick what matters: the furnace, the well pump, the fridge and the freezer, the sump, and enough light and heat to live normally. A smaller unit carrying the right circuits beats a bigger unit you did not need. Tom works out which one your house is after he has looked at it.

    • What size generator do I need?

The size comes off what is in the house: the furnace or the heat pump, the well pump, the water heater, the range, the AC, and how much of it you want running at the same time when it is minus twenty. One of the Generac installs on this page is a 14 kW unit. Tom sizes yours after he has seen the panel and the property, and the size goes in the estimate.

    • What does the transfer switch do?

It is the part that makes a standby generator automatic. When the power goes, it disconnects your house from the grid and puts the generator on. When the power comes back, it changes over again and shuts the unit down. Nobody has to be home. It also keeps a generator from pushing power back up the line to a lineman working on it, which is why this work is inspected.

    • How much does a Generac cost, installed?

There are two numbers. The unit, which depends on the size. And everything around it: the pad, the run to the house, the transfer switch, the panel work if the panel needs it, the fuel connection, the permit and the inspection. The second number depends on your property, so Tom comes out, looks, and you get one estimate with the whole job in it. Call 519-373-2543 to book that visit.

    • My panel is old. Should I do it at the same time?

Usually, yes. The transfer switch has to be tied into the panel regardless, the power is coming off either way, and the crew is already there. If your panel is an old fuse box, a Federal Pioneer, or 100 amp with a lot added since, say so when you call. It changes the estimate and it is cheaper than doing it twice.

    • Is the work inspected?

Yes. Every job gets the permit and the inspection. We are a licensed electrical contractor, ESA licence 7017291, and covered by WSIB.

    • The power is out and I have no generator. What now?

Call 519-373-2543. Do not fill in the form. Fire or smoke, call 911 first. Downed power line, stay 10 metres back and call 911.
